The Extra-Miler Club is for travelers who have the goal of visiting every county in the United States. Some members have other goals as well - driving every U.S. interstate highway, visiting every national park in the country, visiting state high points, playing golf in every state, visiting all major league baseball stadiums, or checking off roadside attractions. Some members also want to complete all county equivalents in Canada or Mexico or Great Britain. If you have specific travel goals, this club may be just what you have been looking for, because "The Shortest Distance Between Two Points is No Fun."
Reid Williamson, President
(Manakin-Sabot, Virginia)
Reid, an inveterate collector (counties, picture postcards, license plates, birds, trivia), joined the EMC the day he met co-founder Roy Carson in 1991. Serving as Secretary-Treasurer of the EMC for thirteen years allowed him to see America through the eyes of the many club members who sent in their travel reports. He completed his visits to all U.S. counties in 2007, but having completed the lower 48 states in 2000, he started keeping track again on 1/1/01. He has now finished all of the counties in the new millennium. He has been President of EMC since 2016.
Christopher Hulse, Vice President
(Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania)
Chris joined EMC in 1997 and currently has around 2500 counties and nearly 80% of the USA complete. He has 29 states (+DC) completed so far, and has been to all 50 states, a dream he has been pursuing since his grandfather promised to take him to Alaska when he was 12. Chris finally made it happen in 2021. Besides collecting counties, Chris is a Distinguished Toastmaster (which means he gives public speeches for fun!) and enjoys climbing lighthouses, collecting official US state and Canadian provincial/territory maps, and visiting river headwaters and confluences. Chris has been Vice President since 2022.
Valerie Naylor, Secretary and Website Coordinator
(Hill City, South Dakota and Alpine, Texas)
Valerie enjoys traveling the world, often to unusual places like Cuba, Samoa, and the Marshall Islands. Domestically, she travels with her cats (Spirit & Sunlight) and dog (Jillirue) in a Sprinter camper van. In addition to collecting counties, she also collects birds, national park sites and state high points. Her cats also log their counties. She enjoys long distance bicycling, short distance hiking, pickleball, and exploring the desert. Valerie has been Secretary since 2013.
Sarah Bone, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor
(Death Valley, California)
Sarah is an obsessive compulsive hiker, runner, and traveler. As a park ranger she answers questions for a living. As your treasurer and newsletter editor she is happy to answer questions for free. She loves lists and organizing them. Sarah has been Treasurer since 2013.
The Extra Miler Club was founded 51 years ago, in 1973, by Ed Dietz, NE-1, Roy Carson, NV-2 and Tony Burdett, UT-3.
Ed Dietz, NE-1 completed all of the counties and equivalent jurisdictions in 1976.
Roy Carson, NV-2, completed all of the counties and equivalent jurisdictions in 1985.
All three founding members are now deceased. We thank Ed, Roy and Tony for starting us on this very long path!
